WATCH: What emotions does a first-time snowshoeing adventure bring?
Recently, we organised a snowshoeing adventure in Kakerdaja Bog for a group of 40 participants, most of whom were from Spain. They swapped palm trees for Estonian nature for a couple of days. And the result? They were absolutely amazed!
A first visit to an Estonian bog can certainly be an exciting experience. The participants compared the bog landscape to sinking sand, with its soft, springy ground beneath their feet and the feeling that they might sink at any moment.
Our guide, Mari Toom, introduced them to the origins of the bog and explained the importance of preserving these unique natural landscapes.
We welcomed our guests with traditional Estonian sprat sandwiches, followed by hot soup and dessert after the hike.
An hour of active snowshoeing across the soft, bouncy bog terrain gave everyone a wonderful boost of positive energy. Nearly 10,000 steps in the bog passed almost unnoticed, as the stunning views of the colourful landscape and bright red cranberries made time fly by.
Guide Mari also made the hike more fascinating by sharing insights about the bog and explaining:
- how to walk across the bog without sinking;
- how to recognise areas that should be completely avoided for safety reasons;
- what makes up a bog landscape;
- how to preserve and protect these unique natural environments.

Why Go on a Snowshoeing Adventure?
1. The colours of the bog are something special
Shades of red, orange, yellow and green make the autumn bog incredibly beautiful. And stepping off the boardwalk allows you to enjoy this colourful landscape even more.
2. The bog is wetter and softer
In autumn, there is more water and the bog surface can become very soft and wet. Snowshoes distribute your body weight over a larger surface area, allowing you to explore places you wouldn’t want to step into wearing regular shoes.
3. Cranberry season
Autumn is the perfect time to look for and pick cranberries while exploring the bog. On our hike this Saturday, we’ll even make our own cranberry tea!
4. Far fewer insects
Mosquitoes, horseflies and other summer “friends” have mostly disappeared by the time autumn arrives.
5. Snowshoeing makes staying active fun!
Walking on snowshoes is a surprisingly good physical workout. Snowshoeing burns approximately 45% more energy than walking the same distance at a regular pace on flat, firm ground. A great way to kick-start your day!
